HKDSE to France — What Are My Options?
DSE — whether you’re approaching it or have just finished — what comes next?
For most HK families, the default path is local university, then maybe the UK or Australia for those targeting overseas. But there’s another option most students never consider — and it’s more accessible than you think.
France recognises the HKDSE, and the pathways are wider than most HK families realise.
🎓 HKDSE = Baccalauréat
Good news: France officially recognises the HKDSE as equivalent to the French baccalauréat — the standard French secondary school diploma. This means HKDSE holders are eligible to apply to French higher education on the same basis as French students.
No foundation year. No bridging course. No waiting.
🛣️ Your three main pathways
There are three main routes to higher education in France — and HK students can choose the one that best fits their profile and ambitions.
| Pathway | Best for | Admission based on | Tuition | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Public universities | Affordable, academically rigorous programmes with a genuine French university experience | HKDSE results, motivation letter and application file — no entrance exam for most undergraduate programmes | from €2,895/year (~HK$25,000) | Aix-Marseille University, Paris-Saclay, Sorbonne |
| 2. Business schools & private institutions | Business, management, luxury, finance or international careers | Application file, motivation letter and interview — some schools require entrance exams (often waived for international students) | €6,000–20,000/year | EMLyon, INSEEC, IAE Aix |
| 3. Creative & specialist schools | Fashion, film, design, culinary arts or the arts | Portfolio, interview and motivation — academic results are considered but not the main factor | Varies widely | ESMOD (fashion), EICAR (film), French + Gastronomy |
🗓️ When should I apply?
This is the most important decision — and most HK families get it wrong.
The recommended approach: apply DURING your DSE year, not after.
Why? France’s academic year starts in September. If you wait until your DSE results are released in mid-July to start applying, you’ve already missed the application window for that September intake. You’d then need to wait a full year to start in September of the following year — meaning a 12-month gap year.
The smart timeline:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Form 5 (S5) | Begin exploring programmes, attend summer camps in France, plan electives strategically |
| Form 6 (S6) — September to November | Submit applications via the Études en France (EEF) platform |
| December to March | Campus France interview, school decisions |
| April to May | Sit your DSE |
| July | Receive DSE results, confirm your offer |
| August | Visa application |
| September | Start your studies in France 🎉 |
No gap year. Straight from DSE to France.
🤔 What if I missed the window — what now?
If you’ve already finished your DSE without applying, don’t worry — you can still apply for the next September intake. You’ll have a full year before starting university, but here’s how to make it work for you:
| Make the year count | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| 📚 Learn French | Even though most programmes don’t require French, learning it gives you a huge advantage in France socially and professionally |
| 💼 Internship or part-time work | Gain real experience that will strengthen your motivation letter and CV |
| 🎨 Build your portfolio | For creative programmes, this is the perfect time to develop your work |
| 🌍 Attend a French summer programme | Get a real taste of student life and demonstrate your commitment |
| 📖 Strengthen your application | Research, plan and write a far more compelling motivation letter than a rushed one |
A “gap year” doesn’t have to be wasted time. It can be the most valuable year of preparation — and many students enter university stronger because of it.
